Black isn't just black.
We I've been studying the paint chip colours for ages now.We I've been thinking that our exterior paintwork is looking a bit weathered and flaky. It's been 15 years since our house was painted and that's probably way over the recommendation for longevity for even the best of paints on a house's exterior. Can't remember where the idea of experimenting with "the dark side" came from but now I come to think of it, we've I've added little bits ( and sometimes lots) of black inside too.
The top colour is similar to the overall colour of the bricks ( can't change).
It's been fun auditioning all the possibilities. I do struggle however, trying to visualise the finished product.
And a play with some black strips of Domino blu-tacked to one door and post.

Sedum......thriving in the heat.
Queen Anne's Lace seed was tossed willy nilly all over the place and has popped up in the most unexpected places. The second photo is the chocolate version. There were only two germinations of that one but I find myself checking it every day. I adore it's subtle difference from the original and will definitely be collecting the seeds of that one.
Basil.....my favourite summer herb. The intense, clove-y smell is unlike any other. It wouldn't be summer without it.
I recently took some cuttings of artemesia, salvia, agastache, Russian sage and ornamental grapevine ( to plant across the front veranda when we paint the posts Domino!!!!) They are currently residing in the bath inside. It's the only part of the whole property that is cool and light. Everywhere else in this place right now is hot and light.
Can't wait to get these new bulbs in the raised beds up the back. Lots of them are new to me.
I could seriously lose my toes down these cracks. In fact it looks like something has already disappeared down this one.

There's charcoal, slate, licorice, ebony, jet, onyx, murky...... and then there's all the blacks on the paint charts.
The selections are endless and overwhelming.

Of course there are certain elements that can't be changed ( well, they can be but not on our budget), such as the cream colorbond roof and the red bricks.
And lots of elements that can be factored into "the look", such as the plantings around the house, the colour of benches and pots, the colour of outdoor lighting etc
I can't help thinking that a darker trim on the house will give it a sense of being grounded, and blend in with the surroundings. Afterall, we take so many of our cues from Nature, an expert in colour blends.
So with all things considered, this is what we've I've decided upon.

The third from top colour is the roof ( considerably faded now) and gutters (painted five years ago after the fire ).
The bottom colour will be the fascia, posts and window trim.
Which just leaves the front door. There'll be a bit ( or a lot) of mulling on that one.

Bill and I had a lovely time at the farm in Dixie with these two gorgeous young men and the multitude of animals that call this piece of paradise home.
